Keeping the main thing the main thing...

So, just after I posted the post right before this one... I read this:

Paul wrote, “But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.“ - 2 Timothy 4:5

Paul calls Timothy to “do the work of an evangelist.” We say it so often: the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. Cultivating a constant burden for the lost and striving toward consistent witness keeps the heart in touch with the heart and mission of Jesus, who came to “seek and to save those who are lost.” It is easy to get so absorbed in keeping the aquarium that we lose our passion to fish for men.

Yup...

And... I've also been thinking a lot about the whole "fishing" analogy. I won't exhaustively type out all of the thoughts about it now - but I challenge you to think about the "fishing for men" analogy. ;) PLEASE post comments with your thoughts if you have the time to share. :)

Okay... now I'm going fishing... ;)

At church they recently played a video of a sermon by Andy Stanley. He started off with a story about a time he went shark fishing as a teenager...all the other "pro" fishermen had fancy, expensive lures, special rods, bait, etc. Andy and his friend (Louie Giglio) went to a hardware store and bought like $10 worth of stuff and made their own sad version of a pole, complete with a bloody steak as bait. And while all the pros stood by not catching a SINGLE THING, the amateurs caught themselves a shark. His point was that when it comes to fishing for men, you don't need an expensive degree, you don't need to have the best "words" or have the entire Bible memorized. The only thing that you need to be able to tell the men that you're "fishing" for is this: John 3:16. And he broke down even more simple: GOD LOVED, GOD GAVE, WE BELIEVE, WE RECEIVE.

Isn't that awesome? I just ate it up. It's so simple. While I love studying the Bible and analyzing life, etc. sometimes it's good to step back and refocus on the MAIN THING. :)
